What is Functional Fitness?

To enjoy the glow of good health, you must exercise because the pain you feel today will be the strength you need tomorrow for your daily chores.

Functional fitness is one that fits right to the picture, as it is the latest gym buzzword in the fitness industry. It’s about training that is intended to make you stronger in life.

At the most basic level, the term functional fitness refers to exercises that focus on building a body capable of performing real-life activities in real-life positions.

What do we do in our daily lives that we need to be stronger at?

There are three common activities that all of us normally perform and want to be strong in:

  1. Holding up your own body weight
  2. Pushing or pulling heavy objects
  3. Getting up and down off the ground

If you are strong at all the elements mentioned above, you’re probably fit and if you need to improve strength, do incorporate functional fitness in your routine to stay fit year-round.

Components of Functional Fitness

  • These include:
  • Strength
  • The range of motion
  • Balance/coordination
  • Power and mobility

According to the American Council of Exercise, movements such as walking, jumping, running, sprinting, jogging, lifting, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, starting, stopping, turning, and standing, will be made easier to improve strength and range of motion.

Is Functional Fitness Right for You?

If functional fitness sounds interesting to you, do consider “how you will be completing these exercises?”

We advise you to start at a beginner’s pace and try making yourself comfortable into it. It is best to consult a fitness expert.

As you become adjusted to this style of training, try adding more resistance. Group fitness classes may sound interesting because an individualized program tailors the exercises to your goals and ensures success.

Whatever method you choose, functional fitness ensures that your goals are realistic and achievable.
