In a standard weight plate, each unique weight is also a different diameter. On the other hand, bumper plates are all the same diameter. However, instead of varying in physical size, they vary in thickness and construction.

The standard (1-inch center hole) weight plates are commonly available in 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 35, and 50lb denominations.

Usually, there are two general categories: standard plates, which have a center hole of about one inch, and Olympic plates, which are meant to fit on the two-inch barbells.

While you do not necessarily need a bumper plate for a deadlift, having a bumper plate is ideal for a deadlift. Without a bumper plate, you would end up dropping your bar regularly, and you are more likely to damage your floor and weights without bumper plates.
