A lot of people have a fear of injections as it can be a painful experience and can even cause some complications at times such as swelling, infections and so on. The situation becomes very difficult when someone with such fear gets an ailment that require regular injections. Thankfully, scientists have worked on a study that has proposed an effective and more convenient solution.

The study recently published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science is a major breakthrough in the field of drug delivery, providing a new and innovative way to treat patients with chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. The conventional method of treatment has often proven to be a challenge for patients, who face difficulties with regular injections, including fear of needles, pain, and the risk of infection. These difficulties often result in patients skipping doses, which in turn, leads to a lack of efficacy.

With this study conducted by researchers at Baylor College of Medicine, the use of the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri as an oral drug delivery platform provides a new and exciting alternative. The researchers chose L. reuteri because it is recognized as safe by the US Food and Drug Administration and has a good safety profile. The researchers modified the bacteria to produce and release compounds, including a peptide from sea anemone venom, which was previously shown to effectively and safely reduce disease severity in patients with plaque psoriasis.

Research Found Lrs235, A Bacteria, An Effective Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthristis

In the study, daily delivery of the bacteria, which was named LrS235, dramatically reduced the clinical signs of rheumatoid arthritis, including joint inflammation, cartilage destruction, and bone loss. The results showed that this new delivery strategy combined efficacy with limited side effects, offering a better alternative to the conventional method of treatment. The study highlights the potential of using Lactobacillus reuteri as a novel oral drug delivery platform and provides hope for patients suffering from chronic conditions who are looking for an alternative to injections.

The Details… The researchers genetically modified the bacteria to produce and release compounds, including a peptide from sea anemone venom that effectively and safely reduced disease severity in patients with plaque psoriasis.

Key findings.. The findings of the study offer a promising new way to deliver drugs to patients suffering from chronic conditions. The use of Lactobacillus reuteri as an oral drug delivery platform provides a new and innovative alternative, which could make treatment easier for patients in the future, allowing them to take capsules instead of daily injections. The findings provide a promising alternative delivery strategy for peptide-based drugs and suggest that it can be applied to a broad range of drugs and treatments for chronic inflammatory diseases. This study represents a major breakthrough in the field of drug delivery and provides a new way to help patients suffering from chronic conditions.
